How do you remove slate tile floor from a wood sub-base?

In the beginning, the tile came up very nice…..then with about an area 1′X4′ (by the front door) the tile is breaking and the glue is holding it in place. Will a heat gun work to get the rest or is there a better way??? I am preparing to have hardwood floors installed.

hammer and chisel would be the most time consuming way with lots of elbow grease, but wouldn’t cost any money if you already own both. consider renting a chipping hammer from a tool rental place by the hour if available, or for half a day as a maximum. it’ll come up in 15-20 minutes with the chipping hammer and shouldn’t cost more than $50 for the half day’s rental (should be cheaper i would think). do protect windows nearby and such and wear safety glasses. use the flat chisel attachment and start at the edge of the tile to be removed. go at a 45 degree angle or so and just push the chipping hammer under the tiles. don’t force it, the chipping hammer will do all the work rather nicely. good luck!
